When a head gasket fails it can allow coolant to leak into the engine oil. Oil and coolant are not meant to mix so when they do the engine’s heat and movement whip them together into a thick brown or tan sludge often compared to chocolate milk. This contaminated oil can show up on the dipstick under the oil fill cap or throughout the valve train.

This sludge is more than just a visual issue. Coolant in the oil strips away lubrication which puts bearings camshafts and other internal components at risk. As the mixture circulates it can cause accelerated wear overheating and in severe cases complete engine failure if the problem is not addressed quickly.

While brown residue can sometimes appear from condensation in engines that only see short cold trips a true head gasket leak will not clear up with normal driving. Coolant levels may drop oil levels may rise and performance issues can develop. Proper testing is critical because continuing to drive with coolant contaminated oil can cause serious and expensive damage.
