![Stephanie Mills Says Gladys Knight Showed Signs of Dementia on Tour, Then Calls Out Knight’s Husband
Blogged by: Grace L.
Stephanie Mills is speaking out about Gladys Knight’s health, claiming the legendary singer showed signs of dementia while they were performing together on The Queens Tour. Mills also believes the 82-year-old music icon should no longer be touring and is questioning whether the people managing her career are making decisions in her best interest.
During her October 14 appearance on BET’s “The Jason Lee Show,” Mills, 69, discussed Knight’s condition and the difficulties she reportedly witnessed during their time on the road together.
“She was having problems [during the tour], [exhibiting] early stages of dementia. She still sounded amazing…[but] she was a little confused,” Mills revealed.
The comments have renewed concerns about Knight’s well-being following months of public allegations involving her health, touring schedule, and husband, William McDowell, who also manages her career.
Although Mills described what she believed were early symptoms of dementia, her statements do not establish a confirmed medical diagnosis. McDowell previously told TMZ that Knight had not been diagnosed with the condition.
Mills also addressed who should take responsibility for deciding whether Knight continues performing. She pointed directly to McDowell, arguing that protecting the singer’s health should come before maintaining her concert schedule.
“I believe it’s the responsibility of her husband. Her husband is her manager, or co-manager,” she said.
“I think it’s the responsibility of her husband, but I don’t think she should still be out there [performing] even though they’ll say ‘oh, well she wants to be.’” I don’t really believe that.”
Mills went further, suggesting veteran entertainers should be allowed to “bow out with grace” rather than continue working under circumstances that could compromise their well-being. She also used the phrase “not be pimped” while discussing the treatment of older performers, extending her concerns to artists including Ron Isley and Charlie Wilson.](https://s11.imginn.com/853813708_18694381585043519_2016067368203063509_n.jpg?t51.82787-15/853813708_18694381585043519_2016067368203063509_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_p720x720_tt6&_nc_cat=106&ig_cache_key=NDAxMjMzODQ2MzM2MTU1OTQzOQ%3D%3D.3-ccb7-5&ccb=7-5&_nc_sid=58cdad&efg=eyJ2ZW5jb2RlX3RhZyI6IkNBUk9VU0VMX0lURU0ueHBpZHMuMTA4MC5zZHIucmVndWxhcl9waG90by5DMyJ9&_nc_ohc=KdKzP0Px1bQQ7kNvwEvysNN&_nc_oc=AdogDPFiii6Jh5c2vuRKnWWcHpX_Xc3zvmzeVHFyzOEgYa8ZIWQ4a6pO_QiMXRbsuzl0rWNyRtnHe936RO1xcB5b&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.cdninstagram.com&_nc_gid=RrC0QOE_f667DB-Xlu8fsw&_nc_ss=70689&oh=00_AQP4hV6sHW-1qTSfHdDRDDVXCx56UtxwfqGGCi8zxSrT-Q&oe=6ADD9314)
