Do any astronauts wanna get in on the oil business?⁣
⁣
Hiring an oil tanker from the US to China now costs about $80 million, according to shipbroker Gibson. That’s more than it costs to send a rocket to space. Yep. That’s right. A standard Falcon 9 launch runs SpaceX roughly $74 million, $6 million less than that US to China tanker trip.⁣
⁣
Brokerage SSY says that even after adjusting for inflation, the prices for supertankers are now the highest they have ever been in supertankers’ 75 years of existence.⁣
⁣
The staggering prices are the result of there simply not being enough tankers to transport all the barrels of oil that they need to. The War in Iran and its effect on the Strait of Hormuz has forced tankers to reroute, adding up to a week to their journeys. This, in turn, stretches out the global fleet.⁣
⁣
According to Bloomberg, though, the industry is adapting. Many shipments normally fit for a supertanker are now being split up between smaller tankers. Middle Eastern producers like Iraq and the UAE have even purchased tankers in recent weeks.⁣
