Trump missed out on the Nobel Peace Prize, and hours later his administration hit the court the winner once served on with sweeping sanctions.

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize went to Navi Pillay, a South African jurist and former judge at the International Criminal Court, “for her efforts to promote peace and international law.” She also led the UN commission that found Israel committed genocide in Gaza.

That same day, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced sanctions on the entire ICC, cutting it off from US banks and tech companies. “We will ban transactions with this rogue court, cutting off their resources and crippling its ability to operate against us,” Rubio said, adding, “Either the ICC will end its threats, or we will end the ICC.”

At his rally, Trump said, “Today they gave out the Nobel Peace Prize to a person, I’ve never heard of the person. It’s a mystery person. I settled eight wars.”

The administration’s fight with the ICC goes back years, but the timing has people talking. The court says its work will continue.
