Moving to Canada is exciting, but it’s not something to do on vibes alone.
These are 7 things I genuinely wish I knew before I landed:
1️⃣ Don’t choose a province or city based on vibes.
Research rent, jobs, transportation, childcare, and cost of living.
Some places are so expensive you end up spending more than you save.
2️⃣ Start applying for jobs before you land.
You can already have interviews lined up when you arrive.
It gives you direction and reduces pressure.
3️⃣ Use no-fee banks when starting out.
Banks like
@tangerinebank or
@eqbank help you avoid monthly charges that quietly add up.
You can add a traditional bank later if needed.
4️⃣ If you’re moving with family, plan for a car.
Public transit helps, but a car saves time, stress, and money — especially with kids and winter.
5️⃣ Apply for daycare before you arrive.
Waitlists in some cities and provinces are very long.
Waiting can delay work and income.
6️⃣ Opportunity exists, but it won’t chase you.
Canada rewards consistency, not entitlement.
Jobs won’t chase you. Wealth won’t chase you.
Connections won’t magically appear.
You have to apply, reapply, network, show up, and sometimes start small intentionally.
7️⃣ Be careful with offers and credit cards.
Pre-approved limits, and “easy payments” can quietly pull you into debt.
If you don’t understand the interest, fees, and repayment terms, don’t accept it.
Many people get into huge debt in Canada not because they’re reckless — but because they weren’t informed.
• If you’re planning to move or you’ve just landed, save this for later.
• Share it with a friend 🫶🏽.
• And if you’ve already relocated — what’s one thing you wish you knew earlier?
