In many ways, The Shadow of the Wind is the perfect book. This gothic mystery is beautifully written and deftly plotted (even its sub plots have their own sub plots) and some of the characters stay with you long after you’ve finished the last page.

I revisit it every five years or so: enough time to forget some of the minor twists and turns.

I first read it during my final exams at university. I was studying maths and started dreaming in equations (Yup. Nerd.) I needed a way to switch off and immerse myself in something - anything - else. The book swallowed me whole and planted my mind in 1950s Barcelona - a world of secrets and intrigue.

The one downside: the female characters are a bit simplistic for my liking, but otherwise it’s a five star read for me.

Are there any books that you return to read again? (and again…and again…)

could not agree with you more. thank you for sharing how you found this book - it's so magical to hear the different ways Shadow has come into peoples' lives. and while i totally agree about the female characters, i'm just goign to posit that that might be also a bit of a riff on the classic Gothic genre itself - just the damsel in distress and/or the angel in the attic (or whatever the trope was called) and her counterpart, the hypersexualized femme fatale (which i think was especially/ mostly present in Book 4)
