Hello there 👋

#bookstagram by @racheltekabooks

Magical woods + a great book? Yes please.

We stumbled upon this beautiful spot when exploring @hughendennt @nationaltrust over the weekend.

I love a @nationaltrust secondhand bookshop and the one at @hamhousent is a beaut.

It’s small but has a great range of fiction and non fiction. Paperbacks are a pound each and I found a Frieda McFadden book I haven’t read yet.

Ham House is in Richmond, West London and well worth a visit.

May book stack

Janice Hallett is my favourite mystery/crime writer at the moment. She tells her stories in creative ways. Her books are funny, emotional and often surprisingly clever.

Not met her before? A few suggestions on where to start:

🎭 The Appeal: Her first bestseller. Mostly told through emails, this tale follows a local theatre group as murder approaches. Fast paced and hilarious, I laughed out loud multiple times

📖 The Twyford Code: my favourite book of 2025. I *loved* it. Told through the written transcript of voice recordings from a man searching for the teacher who mysteriously vanished when he was a boy. The twists and clever storytelling are soooo satisfying.

🧐 The Examiner: Told through online messages and texts, with characters you can’t stand at first but learn to love. A slower paced start, but this one had a midway twist I didn’t see coming (and after that was hard to put down).

No better way to spend an afternoon imo

I haven’t reached the Can’t-put-this-book-down stage yet, but I’ve heard that Throne of Glass really kicks off in book three … so I’m hanging in there.

Have you read this series?

This book had me gripped to the point where I was walking along the street, eyes fixed on the page (not the safest, I know) because I couldn’t bear to put it down.

The story centres around Korede, who faithfully covers up her sister Ayoola’s crimes against a string of unlucky boyfriends… until one day, Ayoola starts dating the man Korede is secretly in love with.

It’s a fast paced read and I found myself sympathising with the main character, even as she acted in ways I found hard to stomach. I highly recommend it.

The children are playing in the garden (they’re apparently “rearranging the plants.” I’m sure that’s totally fine 😬😬) so I’m taking a few moments for myself and diving back into my book.

What are you reading this weekend?

In many ways, The Shadow of the Wind is the perfect book. This gothic mystery is beautifully written and deftly plotted (even its sub plots have their own sub plots) and some of the characters stay with you long after you’ve finished the last page.

I revisit it every five years or so: enough time to forget some of the minor twists and turns.

I first read it during my final exams at university. I was studying maths and started dreaming in equations (Yup. Nerd.) I needed a way to switch off and immerse myself in something - anything - else. The book swallowed me whole and planted my mind in 1950s Barcelona - a world of secrets and intrigue.

The one downside: the female characters are a bit simplistic for my liking, but otherwise it’s a five star read for me.

Are there any books that you return to read again? (and again…and again…)

I rarely read non fiction but I *loved* ‘So you’ve been publicly shamed’, so when I stumbled upon this book by the same author, I had to get it.

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received is to stay curious about people. Jon Ronson’s writing excels at this, so I’m looking forward to diving into these essays alongside my fiction reads, and perhaps learning something new from spending time on the page with people I wouldn’t normally meet in my everyday life.

Do you mix things up with non fiction from time to time?

There’s nowhere else I’d rather be right now
