The supergroup officially formed in the mid-1980s, releasing their debut album, “Highwayman,” in 1985. Its title track, written by Jimmy Webb, became a No. 1 country hit, with each member singing a different verse that followed a soul living multiple lives across different eras. The group went on to release three studio albums, creating a rare collaboration between four artists who had already changed country music individually. With songs like “Desperados Waiting for a Train” and “The Last Cowboy Song,” The Highwaymen embodied the independent spirit of outlaw country.
