In 1979, Madonna was an aspiring dancer struggling to make it in New York when she met musician Dan Gilroy at a party. They began dating, and she moved into the old synagogue in Corona, Queens, where Gilroy lived and worked with his brother Ed.

While the brothers waited tables by day and performed comedy at night, Madonna practiced drums and began writing songs. Gilroy taught her to play guitar, and together they formed the band Breakfast Club. She eventually convinced him to let her sing her own songs.

In 1980, Madonna left Breakfast Club to form her own band, Emmy and the Emmys. These photos were taken by Gilroy in New York in 1979, during their time together.

⭐️🤡RODEO CLOWN🤠🐓 (bb girl🎀) Lollygag’s “cuntry” look on @kingofdragtv episode 4
🤡This theme gave me the opportunity to learn more about rodeo clowns, a particularly dangerous category of clowning‼️ Traditionally the rodeo clown has two tasks: protect the fallen bull rider, and provide comedic relief. The Rodeo clowns use quick reflexes, bright colors, and patterns to distract the bull and provide an alternate target to attack.
Rodeo clowns wear loose fitting clothes that are designed to tear away easily if the bull gets a hold of them. Hence my GIANT YELLOW PANTS by the incredible @pinwheelpinwheel who was just the perfect person for this‼️
The size of these gorgeous pants was also inspired by the massive barrels used by rodeo clowns🛢️🤡
🤠My giant yellow hat is an “authentic” rodeo clown hat, the largest one I could find on the market‼️ This look was SO fun to do, and I definitely felt very gender 🤡🔥 something about the tooth gap and big pants… idk
