Reports suggest that a 23-year-old woman in Iran named Najmeh Amini has been sentenced to death for blasphemy over comments made on social media.

In this audio, attributed to Najmeh speaking from prison and released in September, she is heard calling for international groups to investigate her case.

The UN human rights chief Volker Türk said in August that he was alarmed by the rise in executions in Iran, with capital punishment continuing to be used “to instil fear among the population and suppress dissent”.

Iran is thought to be the world’s second-most prolific executioner after China. Last year, it put to death at least 2,159 people, according to Amnesty International.
