It is over 1,000 years old, believed to have been built in the 12th century (though some monks claim it dates back even earlier)
In the 17th century, Dhankar was the capital of the Spiti Valley Kingdom. It was the seat of the Nonos (local rulers) who governed the region from this strategic vantage point.
The name “Dhankar” comes from Dhang (cliff) and Kar (fort). It literally means “Citadel on a Cliff.
It was built as a “Fort Monastery” to protect the valley from invasions. From its height (3,894 meters), the rulers could spot enemies from miles away.
Today, it is listed as one of the 100 most endangered monuments in the world due to the fragile nature of the cliff and the ancient mud-brick architecture.
