الإنسان لا يسلك في حياته كابن للطبيعة ، بل كمغترب عنها .
‎شعوره الأساسي هو الخوف ، إلا أنه ليس خوفا بيولوجياً إنما هو خوف روحي كوني بدائي موصول بأسرار الوجود الإنساني و ألغازه . إنه خوف ممتزج بحب الاستطلاع و الإعجاب و الدهشة و النفور ، تلك المشاعر المختلطة التي تكمن على الأرجح في أعماق ثقافتنا و فنوننا كلها.

The shortcoming of modern man is evident, for the most part, in his belief that everything is clear to him. His wisdom is the sum of his knowledge plus a vast amount of ignorance of which he is unaware, or better yet, which he accepts as knowledge. In the face of the Great Mystery, he acts with confidence and arrogance. He does not see the enigma, and herein lies the vast measure of his ignorance and prejudice.”

‎وكلما نمت معرفتنا عن العالم تزايد إدراكنا بأننا لا يمكن أن نكون أسياد مصائرنا. حتى مع افتراض أعظم تقدم ممكن للعلم، فإن مقدار ما سيكون تحت سيطرتنا من عوامل لا يساوي شيئا إذا قورن بالكم الهائل من العوامل الخارجة عن هذه السيطرة. إن حجم الإنسان لا يتناسب مع حجم هذا الكون الفسيح، وعمر الإنسانية كلها ليس وحدة قياس لما يجري في هذا الكون من أحداث. وهذا هو سبب ما يعتري الإنسان من شعور دائم بالخطر، وما ينعكس على نفسيته من حالات التشاؤم والتمرد واليأس واللامبالاة، أو التسليم لله. إن الإسلام يجتهد في تنظيم هذا العالم عن طريق التنشئة والتعليم والقوانين التي شرعها، وهذا هو مجاله المحدود أما مجاله الرحيب فهو التسليم لله.

“As our knowledge of the world grows, so does our realization that we cannot be the masters of our own
destiny. Even assuming the greatest possible progress of science, the factors under our control amount to nothing when compared to the vast array of factors beyond our control. The size of man is disproportionate to the vastness of this universe, and the entire lifespan of humanity is not a valid measure for the events that transpire within it.
This is the cause of man’s constant sense of danger, reflected in his psyche as states of pessimism, rebellion, despair, apathy, or submission to God. Islam strives to organize this world through upbringing, education, and the laws it has enacted; this is its limited realm. Its vast realm, however, is submission to God.”
