![They never met. They didn’t know the same language. But somehow, they were speaking the same color 💙
Kim Whanki and Yves Klein never crossed paths, but both shared similar artistic approaches with their minimalist, monochromatic works. Even more interestingly, both Kim and Klein used blue as a metaphysical field or philosophical space to represent the cosmic and infinite.
🔹 Kim took these ideas further with his repetitive dots and grids that bring to mind patterns of the constellations and feelings of melancholy and belonging.
🔹 Whereas, Klein continually reduced the elements in his works to the point where paint became the subject, including his own special patented color called International Klein Blue.
This pairing is one of many moments in “RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me” where a work from RM’s collection and a work from SFMOMA’s collection are hung side by side, in dialogue, for the first time.
Swipe to see them side by side, and tell us what you see when these two meet? ✨
