Looters target luxury stores in France as nationwide cost-of-living protests turn violent Nationwide protests over the rising cost of living in France turned violent on Saturday, October 17, as looters targeted luxury stores and other businesses across several cities. Tens of thousands of demonstrators, including students, teachers and trade union members, took to the streets in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Lille and Nice to protest rising prices, fuel costs and concerns about the education system. In Paris, masked individuals reportedly smashed shop windows and looted businesses near Place de la République. Videos circulating online showed crowds entering a Louis Vuitton store, while supermarkets, skincare shops, sports stores and phone outlets were also targeted. Similar incidents were reported at an Apple store in Lille and Hermès and other shops in Marseille, with further disturbances in Lyon and Nice. Police deployed tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds as fires broke out in several locations. Vehicles and bins were set ablaze in Paris, while a tourist office was reportedly set on fire in Lyon. In Marseille, protesters briefly entered the town hall. Authorities reported more than 270 arrests nationwide by late afternoon, blaming much of the violence and property damage on groups they described as far-left agitators.
