Yan is a mother who was diagnosed with HIV several years after unknowingly experiencing early symptoms of the virus. Around four to five years before her diagnosis, she recalls becoming suddenly and severely ill with flu-like symptoms, including muscle aches, difficulty eating and swallowing, and extreme fatigue. At the time, she had just separated from her husband, moved into a new home, and was raising her children on her own for the first time. Believing her illness was caused by stress and a bad flu, she did not realize it could have been acute HIV infection. Her symptoms lasted about a week before disappearing, leaving her unaware of the underlying cause. Yan now reflects on that period as the likely early stage of her HIV journey, using her experience to help others understand the signs and realities of the virus.
