Dr. Isla Myers-Smith is a Professor and Research Chair in Global Change Ecology of Northern Ecosystems at
@universityofbc. Her work explores how climate change is transforming the Arctic, from the “greening” of the tundra as shrubs expand, to the thawing of permafrost (ground that has remained frozen for thousands of years) as temperatures rise. 🌡️❄️
Explaining the importance of her research, she notes: “What happens in the Arctic does not stay in the Arctic. When the permafrost thaws and the vegetation changes, that disrupts the carbon cycle potentially altering the global climate.”
