POV: Your #UBCFES research takes you to Greenland 🌎❄️

Meet Ciara Norton, an MSc student in the Team Shrub lab! Ciara is taking part in a permafrost course in Greenland and shares more about the experience:

“I am a first year master's Student in the Team Shrub research lab studying permafrost thaw. My current research investigates landslides and thaw slumps caused by permafrost thaw on Qikiqtaruk - Herschel Island in the Yukon, but this research has taken me to other amazing landscapes across the Arctic as well.

One of these places is Greenland where I lived in Sisimiut studying permafrost in the UArctic Permafrost in Arctic Societies course. This interdisciplinary course covered a broad range of topics in permafrost science ranging from best practices engineering in permafrost, the ground thermal regime and modelling of permafrost, field work and how permafrost impacts Arctic societies.

I am excited to bring what I learned in Sisimiut back home to my research at UBC, but first I jet off to Ny-Ålesund to look at Mycorrhizal fungi beneath the shrubs!” by @teamshrub

Climate change is reshaping plant communities across Europe—and UBC Forestry & Environmental Stewardship professor Dr. Isla Myers‑Smith is helping reveal how.

A new Nature study spanning 6,000+ vegetation plots shows that warm-adapted species are rapidly increasing, while cold‑adapted mountain plants are disappearing at unprecedented rates. The result? A growing “climatic debt”, where ecosystems can’t keep pace with warming.

Dr. Isla Myers-Smith is a Professor and Research Chair in Global Change Ecology of Northern Ecosystems at @universityofbc. Her work explores how climate change is transforming the Arctic, from the “greening” of the tundra as shrubs expand, to the thawing of permafrost (ground that has remained frozen for thousands of years) as temperatures rise. 🌡️❄️

Explaining the importance of her research, she notes: “What happens in the Arctic does not stay in the Arctic. When the permafrost thaws and the vegetation changes, that disrupts the carbon cycle potentially altering the global climate.”

Join us in congratulating #UBCForestry Professor and Research Chair in Global Change Ecology of Northern Ecosystems, Dr. Isla Myers-Smith, on being named a Member of the Royal Society of Canada | La Société royale du Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.🍁

Dr. Myers-Smith is a globally recognized leader in Arctic ecosystem science and ecology. Renowned for her pioneering Arctic greening research, she is a leading expert on how tundra vegetation responds to climate change, including the process of shrubification. Her impactful, interdisciplinary, and inclusive research is conducted in close collaboration with international partners and communities across the Canadian North.

Congratulations, Isla!👏 @teamshrub

Have you ever wondered what it takes to plan for a three-month-long field season in the Canadian North?

Team Shrub’s summer preparations begin months before we head north. Logistics planning only accelerates once we reach Whitehorse and then gets kicked up a notch in the great metropolis of Inuvik, the city that never sleeps. Throughout the summer, about half our work is logistics for our field research. In our new blog post, we reveal all the secrets of Arctic science logistics.

Team Shrub logistics often revolve around fitting too much stuff in our car, too much in the plane, just too much in general - but every item has its use in our fieldwork. Will we or won’t we fly? It all depends on the weather. Time is spent stressing about the winds, clouds and runway conditions - with Isla checking every model and map as often as possible.

For life on Qikiqtaruk – Herschel Island, we need to plan and prepare food for every possible scenario. We’re in and out of Inuvik grocery stores, to purchase our food. Meat Mode has us cooking and freezing all our meats for life on the Island, while we swelter in the Inuvik heat. Those are zany, wacky and wonderful times!

Finally, once the bags and boxes are packed, and out at the hanger all weighed for the flight – you get the call that it is time to fly. You load into the back of the Twin Otter, taxi along the runway and then you’re airborne and your stress falls away. Then after an hour flight and an exciting landing on the beach airstrip, you step on Qikiqtaruk and know that you are there – now the science can begin!

The deadline is fast approaching to apply for postdocs and PhDs on spatial patterning in tundra and savanna ecosystems for the interdisciplinary European Research Council RESILIENCE Synergy Grant project on Team Shrub in the Faculty of Forestry at UBC.

We also have open postdoc positions on tundra plant phenology and vegetation change and the impacts on wildlife as a part of the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Global Change Ecology of Northern Ecosystems! Then there are the data scientist and research manager posts that are about to go live too!
