More than half of the UK’s traditional crafts are now at risk of disappearing. That’s 165 of the 285 assessed in Heritage Crafts’ 2025 Red List, from bobbin lace making to glove making to thatching.

The reassuring bit: most of these skills aren’t gone. They’re just in very few, very skilled hands. And there’s something genuinely grounding about watching someone do one thing slowly and beautifully.

So we’re starting Meet The Makers, a new series of stories and films spotlighting the craftspeople keeping these skills alive, across the UK and (hopefully) beyond. Kilt makers, silk weavers, lace crafters, and whoever you tell us about next.

Where should we start? Comment the craft you’d most like us to explore, or tag a maker you think deserves the spotlight. Extra points if they work out of a shed.

Day 1 back in the gym! 💪🏻❤️

Cleared by my doctor to return back to the gym so I hit some chest and triceps. I kept it light and I am taking it easy as I recover. Thank you all so much for all the love and support this past week! Lying in the hospital it was amazing to read all the positive comments and prayers! I’m SO grateful to have such an incredible community!

The overlooked jobs that keep the world moving.

Yesterday i was sitting in the back of an uber and randomly thought about how underappreciated that job can be. this person had just taken me from point A to point B, and probably spent the next few hours doing the exact same thing for dozens of other people. without that convenience, would some of us even leave the house as much as we do?

I used to think about the same thing in school when a bathroom would get destroyed by some kids “messing around.” somebody had to clean that. a mother, a father, someone who probably took pride in keeping that place clean, only for their work to be ruined for no reason.

There are so many jobs like that. firefighters who run toward emergencies most of us would run away from. vets you might not think about until your pet suddenly needs help. window cleaners hanging 20 or 30 stories above the ground just so the view from your apartment stays clean. sanitation workers, nurses, custodians, mechanics, crossing guards, transit workers, the list could go on forever.

I think we get so used to things working that we stop thinking about the people making them work. clean streets, working elevators, food showing up, safe buildings, getting home at night, all of it starts to feel automatic when it really isn’t.

And I want to make it very clear this post isn’t about saying one job matters more than another. i just wanted to show some love to the people doing work that can easily go unnoticed even though so much of our everyday life depends on it.

If you have one of those jobs, thank you. you might not always get reminded of how important what you do is, but everybody really does have a piece of this huge puzzle that keeps the world moving.
