Released as a single on December 10, 2011, “Pakurumo” became one of the defining records from Wizkid’s debut album, Superstar. The song was produced by Samklef, with Wizkid credited as the writer. But the story behind the record makes the throwback even better. According to a retrospective on Superstar, the idea for “Pakurumo” came from Samklef wanting to create something Fuji-related. Wizkid took that idea and turned it into an energetic pop record built around dancing, romance and the atmosphere of a Nigerian celebration. Even Wizkid later explained the thinking behind the song: they were experimenting with a Fuji-inspired sound without overthinking it, and he recalled performing the song at weddings. That instinct was all over Superstar. The album arrived on June 12, 2011 through Empire Mates Entertainment, containing 17 tracks and blending Afrobeats, reggae, dancehall and R&B. “Pakurumo” sat alongside records such as “Holla at Your Boy,” “Don’t Dull,” “Tease Me/Bad Guys,” “Love My Baby,” “For Me” and “Oluwa Lo Ni.” Apple Music’s retrospective on the album describes “Pakurumo” as a distinctly Lagos-styled track, pointing to its dense polyrhythmic percussion and uptempo 808-driven production. Then came the video. Directed by Clarence Peters, the “Pakurumo” visual was released by EME on December 10, 2011 and built around an owambe-style Nigerian party. The storyline follows a booking mix-up that sends Wizkid to perform at an event originally meant for Pasuma — and Pasuma to another event meant for Wizkid. And the cast was basically a snapshot of Nigerian pop culture at the time. Pasuma. Ali Baba. Tee-A. Funke Akindele. Skales. Lynxxx. Davido. Banky W. Tiwa Savage. Mo’Cheddah. Ice Prince. All appearing in one Wizkid video. That is what makes “Pakurumo” such a great time capsule. You don’t just hear a young Wizkid. You hear 2011 Nigeria. You hear the Fuji influence, the Lagos party culture, the EME era, the old-school celebrity cameos and a 21-year-old Wizkid still figuring out just how far this music thing could take him.
