Turns out starting these cars isn't as easy as you might think. 😉

3D printed buck to copy into sheetmetal.

I finally got a 3D scanner. It’s really going to change the way I go about making certain things. From here, I will be able to pull an accurate pattern from this plastic buck and use it as a reference to form the sheet metal over. The other beauty of it is that it’s portable and I can sit it next to where I’m working for a quick reference.
I took a scan of both sides as well the right hand side sheetmetal part I had already made. I overlapped the 3 scans within fusion 360 to use as a reference to draw my part in the T spline workspace. Learning how to use T splines was a good learning experience and I think it’s going to be handy in the future.

I’ll also add that I’ve had some experience with older 3D scanners in the past with work, they were always a bit finicky to use and very expensive. Einstar kindly sent me this new Rockit and I didn’t expect much for its price and size, but I’m incredibly impressed - I’m not just saying this because they sent it either.
The technology has come so far in a short number of years. The scans only took a few minutes each, tracked really well, the software ran surprisingly well on my MacBook Pro and didn’t lag once, even in wireless mode. Accuracy is 0.2mm which is more than enough for what I’m doing here. The 3D printed result fit perfectly.
I’m looking forward to using the scanner more. I think it will streamline my workflow and it’s also something I can do with Bub which is always a bonus.

Watch this space to see me turn this into metal.
