Accepting a #BAFTA for her short film This Is Endometriosis, Georgie Wileman was cheered on by a room full of A-listers wearing a symbolic blood-red gown emblazoned with ‘fund endometriosis research’, which had been especially designed by her brother Ralf Wileman.

The next day she was at home, doubled over in pain. This is the reality of living with endometriosis, a life-changing condition where cells similar to the lining of the uterus grow elsewhere on the body. Symptoms are often mischaracterised as ‘painful periods’, but as Wileman points out, ‘it’s a full body disease. It’s important for people to understand the severity of the pain – it’s widely considered to be worse than childbirth.’

The intention behind the film is simple: to spread awareness, demand better funding for research into the condition and for symptomatic pain to be taken seriously. Wileman hopes her BAFTA will open doors. ‘We have so many future plans for the This Is Endometriosis movement. We just want to keep spreading the word.’

Using art to project an extremely important health awareness message was beyond wonderful and worthy of a BAFTA award. Incredible achievement by @georgiewileman . Perhaps eventually society will begin to recognise why people are producing these videos - not for dramatic effect but to attract interest in an area of women’s health desperately needing support and change. @georgiewileman was astounding, gracious and a brilliant voice to represent so many.

Thank you for this film and for speaking about this disease. My daughter is living with it, and it is so hard when you don’t know how to help her — and when you blame yourself, thinking that maybe you missed something. Thank you. Society needs to know about this illness that still has no cure. I truly believe that your contribution will help move this issue forward. You cannot imagine how much you have supported women living with this disease and their families. May God bless you and grant you a loving marriage. Thank you.
