Today, after nearly 18 (!) years in the biz, I gave my first Met audition.
I wasn't a singer who was ready to get plucked from a YAP at 28, and I didn't have the "right" contacts to do so anyway. And that makes for a trickier career (not that it's easy the other way either).
I've worked regularly (as much as a soprano can), but it's been a pavement-pounding path that is nowhere near a straight line. It's a path a lot of you reading this walk as well.
And so while this audition may not be a massive deal for every singer, walking in that stage door today was a big win for an artist like me. I worked my ass off to get here, and I'm proud.
And now I will have an enormous beer. 🍺

I love reading and hearing these stories. I bailed early after botched auditions after music school and decided I would take a teaching job and never sing in public again. Long story short …. I’m a happy singer with a good day job with benefits who sings what and when he wants .. but never has to sing. That was the key for me. I doubt if I’ll never sing at the Met at this point but I hope to be in your audience someday👏
