Today, after nearly 18 (!) years in the biz, I gave my first Met audition.

I wasn't a singer who was ready to get plucked from a YAP at 28, and I didn't have the "right" contacts to do so anyway. And that makes for a trickier career (not that it's easy the other way either).

I've worked regularly (as much as a soprano can), but it's been a pavement-pounding path that is nowhere near a straight line. It's a path a lot of you reading this walk as well.

And so while this audition may not be a massive deal for every singer, walking in that stage door today was a big win for an artist like me. I worked my ass off to get here, and I'm proud.

And now I will have an enormous beer. 🍺

I've both covered and been covered a lot over the years. I made my professional opera debut going on as a cover. 19 years later and I'm doing a cover contract right now.

Covering is not a skill that's taught often, but it's important. I've see people get huge career boosts for successfully covering... and I've seen the opposite too.

Here is my imperfect advice for how not to drive everyone around you nuts.

And now for something completely different.

Grateful to be at @chicagooperatheater with lovely humans, covering the utterly perfect @vanessabecerra_ 💗💗💗

Vote. If not for yourself, for those who need our protection, care, and advocacy. Stay awake to their suffering at the hands of this fascist government and vote like their life depends on it. Because it does. 🇺🇸

Week three of 31 days of horror! Some old faves and some new watches for me. What are you watching this week!?

Like most performing artists in the USA, I don't make 100% of my living from performing.

Some write to supplement their income, like me. Others are photographers or voice teachers or social media managers or rideshare drivers or virtual assistants or arts administrators. It's a joy to be able to do what we do, and for me it's a worth the hard work. I like both my careers. However.

That first week of going back to writing most of the day (while fitting in practice sessions) from singing most of the day (while fitting in writing sessions) can be rough. Especially when it's a dream role you could have happily sung for another month or 6.

Hugs to all my homies getting back to the grind this week. 💗💗💗#operasingersofinstagram #operasinger #opera #soprano #operasingers by @katylindhart

I really, really wasn't ready to let this one go. So algorithm be damned: here's a super long reel from the final duet with @operaguyjoe 💔

With love and gratitude to all my @saltmarshopera friends. I hope to see you all very soon.

And Rusalka, I hope to see you very soon too, girl. 🧜‍♀️
