I've both covered and been covered a lot over the years. I made my professional opera debut going on as a cover. 19 years later and I'm doing a cover contract right now.

Covering is not a skill that's taught often, but it's important. I've see people get huge career boosts for successfully covering... and I've seen the opposite too.

Here is my imperfect advice for how not to drive everyone around you nuts.

These are great! I’m definitely passing these on to all of my classes. But as someone who made an entire career out of covering, I’d like to add one thing to these, specifically to number 5. Yes, make it your own! You are unique. You can’t and never will be a carbon copy of someone else. So trust your own uniqueness, your skillset and your expertise. But understand that you are hired so the show can go on. Therefore, whatever you do, do it inside the framework of the show and the framework of the role that was created by the creative team and your “upperstudy.” Every show has a rhythm. Recognize, learn and internalize that rhythm. Some shows, specifically musicals, are very fast paced. It can feel like a running train! Make sure you catch that train and stay on track. If your colleagues are good actors, they are going to be there for you and guide you through the show. Your uniqueness can be a breath of fresh air for them as a bonus, and they’ll be there to catch you in case you slip and (almost) fall. But no matter what you think of believe about what’s wrong or what’s right, it is your responsibility as a cover to make sure you don’t derail the scene or anything about the show that is set. Respect the framework and utilize your own color-pallet to color between the lines. That’s how you can make even the most iconic roles in the most rigid shows, your own.

It's kinda blowing my mind that this needs to even be said. Humility and respect really are critical qualities we can all model. Just a small way to make the work environment better for everyone.

I’m watching @quinnmid embody this with grace at the moment! She’s covering Augusta in Baby Doe at Central City this summer and is truly the ultimate professional. Somehow I’ve never covered, but if I do someday I’ll know how to do it after watching her (and reading this excellent write up). Also, behavior aside, she brought a bug light and knitting to tech week… Like, the forethought! I’m in awe 😂😍😍

I’ve made some of my greatest friends covering! Ain’t that right @eliseqmezzo? ❤️❤️❤️❤️ it is an amazing opportunity to learn another artist’s perspective on the role and can help you find different depth and nuance in the character you may never have thought of!

ABSOLUTELY!! It can often be THANKLESS, unless the company finds themselves in a pickle, but there is an ART to covering!

To sum it up, don't make the director regret calling you to jump in/cover the person who cancelled and wish they had called somebody else instead
