My favorite moment from Hao Weiya’s Painted Skin! Doing my best to give my wife to a demon to save myself. I honestly love playing a bad guy, it is always so theraputic 👹 🧔🏻 US China Music Festival, Hudson Hall, NY by @gornsteinonline

@ccityopera puts on this great event called Apres Opera, where all of us get to bring our non-operatic skills and sing for each other and audience members… It is just perfect! So much joy in the room. Ryan Drickey was thankfully up for switching to banjo for a song, we had the best time!

Thanks CCO and @bigalmansoori for having us!! and thanks to @dajeong_cindy_song for being literally the best cover (and camera person) I have ever known 😍 by @gornsteinonline

Coming down from my Southern high!

I spent the week in Charlotte, North Carolina bringing a new piece to life about Caravaggio’s life and death, which is making it sound saner and maybe less magical than it was… what an INCREDIBLE group of artists assembled into one place!! @kriddin is doing something truly special with 7th Street Concerts - I’m so glad I got to be a part of it, work with old friends and make a bunch of new ones.

Meet Caravaggios’s confessors. They gather at his death bed and wonder, who was this man? Will we ever find out? Can he be absolved before it’s too late?

A fun night last Spring, singing some Scandinavian folk tunes for @loreleiensemble at a night-off party! This is a Danish song called Der står en lind that II learned for an audition in Copenhagen a couple years ago, I have been trying to find reasons to sing it again ever since. Such a beautiful song. Thanks to #bethwiller for the idea/loan #of the Shruti box, it really all came together beautifully! by @gornsteinonline

2026/27 is heeeere!!! ✨🌿✨

Looking forward to a wonderful season of traveling to new places, returning to some of my favorites, and especially excited about remounting one of my favorite pieces by Hasse!

I think most of you know by now that we had plans to move to Europe this past month that imploded in spectacular fashion at the very last minute. As the dust settles over here in Colorado I am feeling immensely grateful to look around and realize what a loving and caring community we have, both here and around the country. I’m truly so grateful for you all!

Let me know if you live in one of these cities, I’d love to see you! ☕️🥂 by @gornsteinonline

One thing about me, I WILL post a fun rehearsal video up to two years later! This one is from last summer, but it made me smile this morning so I’m sharing it with you all.

🌿Happy fern book Friday!🌿

🎵 For this week’s Song of the Week, we’re revisiting Alex Weiser’s Fate Defied, performed by mezzo-soprano Kristin Gornstein and pianist Jeremy Chan.

As we prepare the initial release of the BASS Art Song Database, we’re sharing a preview from our Listening Guides:

This final song carries the simplicity of a pop tune. Weiser highlights words that are colors by setting them as the highest notes of each phrase. The final line is repeated multiple times, gradually fading in volume, an effect familiar from pop songs like The Beatles’ Hey Jude. The result is a song that never seems to truly end, but instead slips out of focus and continues into eternity. It’s a technique with an art song precedent, too: Schubert creates a similar effect at the end of Die schöne Müllerin.

Hear Kristin and Jeremy back at BASS on Valentine’s Day, February 14 at 5PM, for Passions V: Cabaret Night, an intimate evening celebrating the wit, sophistication, and emotional candor of the cabaret tradition.

It’s hard to wrap my head around the fact that there’s only one more week in this wild west summer opera camp village!! I have had THE BEST time, met some absolutely incredible artists, spent time with old friends, and brought Mama McCourt to life while having a blast doing it. Here’s to great opera in Colorado!! 🍩🥂 by @gornsteinonline

I’m really happy to be able to share some of this incredible opera, Hasse’s Antonio e Cleopatra, that we performed in fall 2024. And it’s happening again! January 2027 with the whole, incredible cast and crew. It is so rare that I get to perform any of my repertoire a second time, let alone one I love so much. by @gornsteinonline

Big GRAMMY energy today! I learned so much about the recording industry when Jeremy and I put out our first album almost 2 years ago as @vertexduo. My main takeaway was that I want to do it again!! It’s such an empowering feeling to be able to make an album full of music that YOU want to record. In the classical music world that is a rarity, and a gift. Here’s to more of that in 2027 and beyond! by @gornsteinonline
