Reason No. 1 to hike in Switzerland:
Dense network of hiking trails, alpine huts, restaurants and cable cars

Switzerland has over 65,000 kilometers (40,390 miles) of well-marked hiking trails. That’s lots of trails for a tiny country with an area of only roughly 41,000 square kilometers (that’s less than half the size of Indiana...) Within reasonable distances restaurants and alpine huts are placed along these trails, meaning you will never go hungry and can lighten your backpack by packing less food. Imagine hiking for several hours and then being rewarded by a breathtaking view from a hut terrace, an ice-cold drink, homemade cake – and a toilet.

The alpine huts (aka Swiss Alpine Club huts) allow to stay high up in the Alps – far away from mass-tourism – for several days. Or they can give a one-night, overnight glimpse into Swiss culture. (Don’t be surprised if everyone is in bed by 9 or 10pm as the Swiss will rise really early the next “morning” (think 4am) to climb some mountains.)

Cable cars make everything more accessible so you don’t have to start hiking from the bottom of the valley and can save some time and energy by taking a shortcut. Alternatively, hiking days can be shortened by taking a cable car down to the valley.
