“I’ve had my daughter leaving school asking, ‘Is the building on fire?’” a parent tells NBC News. It’s not a fire. It’s exhaust from a diesel generator outside one of the data centers surrounding Discovery Elementary. The school, attended by more than 600 students, is located in the swath of Northern Virginia known as America’s “data center alley.” A total of 11 centers sit within a half-mile of the school, with two more on the way. There are 264 such generators permitted for use at the data centers within half a mile of Discovery Elementary, according to an NBC News analysis of state Department of Environmental Quality records, raising concerns about the health impacts on students. James Talarico said, “Blessed are the trans children.” Elon Musk turned that into “Talarico will vote to trans your kids.” Seriously? Showing compassion toward transgender children is not the same as advocating for medical interventions, much less forcing them on anyone. We can have legitimate, evidence-based discussions about pediatric healthcare, parental involvement, and medical decision-making without inventing threats to children. When one of the wealthiest and most influential people in the world uses his platform to spread this kind of fearmongering, it deserves to be called out. Children deserve compassion, not to be used as political weapons. #kids #doctor
