A hem at the top of the foot keeps one long line from waist to shoe. A hover breaks it. Fabric, price and brand don’t fix that. For jeans you already own, cycle through your shoes before you write a pair off or pay to hem them. A pair that hovers over kitten heels may be exactly right in low-profile sneakers. I keep a note in my phone with each pair’s inseam and the heel I wear it with. I now have two main clusters: jeans for flats and jeans for kitten heels. I’ve got a few pairs I wear with taller heels, but I rarely add more because I rarely wear 3.5”+ heels. Within the rule, the width adjusts the landing: wide legs end closer to the toe, narrow legs closer to the ankle. The soft fold at the front is called the break. No break on a slightly shorter pant is also correct. A break is not a cuff. Cary Grant and Randolph Scott, 1935, Paramount publicity shot. Gary Cooper, early 1930s. Trousers landing on the shoe in every photo. The simple rules behind the looks that perfected Hollywood. Inseam numbers lie a little: a relaxed crotch seam uses up length before the ankle, a tighter one spends almost none. Two pairs with the same inseam can land in different places.
