โ€œI saw hacksaws, chainsaws, axes, and machetes. Everything was covered in blood.โ€ Ukrainian military medic Yuriy Armash spent more than a year in Russian captivity, including in a torture facility established by Russian occupiers inside a police station in Nova Kakhovka. His testimony is horrifying. Russian FSB officers tortured him with knives, pierced his neck with an awl, and electrocuted him using a military field telephone until he screamed. As a medic, he was also forced to treat civilians who had been brutally beaten by Russian soldiers. He witnessed broken limbs, severe head injuries, and rooms filled with blood-covered torture instruments. Russian occupiers even cut tattoos they disliked from prisonersโ€™ bodies or burned them off. Women were separated by age, taken from their cells at night, and raped. One of the victims was a 14-year-old girl. Armash noticed that she was bleeding and asked whether Russian soldiers had raped her. She silently lowered her head. After he promised not to tell anyone, she answered, โ€œYes.โ€ This is what Russian occupation looks like. This is why Ukrainians are fighting. This is why surrendering Ukrainian territory to Russia is not peace. For millions of Ukrainians, it is a matter of life and death.
