the itch that just keeps coming…. (causally also dropping the new hair🤭)

“Rebecca, always Rebecca. Wherever I walked in Manderley, wherever I sat, even in my thoughts and in my dreams, I met Rebecca.” 🖤

The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our unnamed narrator is swept off her feet by a dashing widower and his sudden proposal of marriage. It is only when they arrive at his beautiful country estate that she realises how large a shadow his late wife Rebecca will cast over their lives.

I loved that Rebecca’s name looms so large in this novel, her name must be mentioned hundreds of times while the new Mrs de Winter remains anonymous throughout. At times she frustrated me as I just wanted her to take charge and have more agency, but that is deliberate on the authors part as her naivety is a plot device and perfectly illustrates the power imbalance in the de Winter’s marriage. I do wonder how contemporary readers reacted to Maxim de Winter because I did not like him at all, the man is literally a walking red flag!

There is a creeping sense of unease from the minute you arrive at Manderley and when the twists and subsequent reveals come feel they feel justified and well earned, the clues are all there if you look for them. There is a good dash of humour in the novel too and that light and shade works really well at keeping you on your toes as the tension builds towards the climax of the book.

I really enjoy novels where the setting becomes a character, and Manderley is the thing that struck me above everything else when I read this book. It lives and breathes and is so beautiful but you know, from very early on, that something terrible lurks behind its facade. Daphne Du Maurier really laid the blueprint for the modern gothic suspense novel, cleverly building upon Jane Eyre’s ‘wife locked in the attic trope’ but made it more frightening in many ways because how can you compete with a ghost?
