Rosamund Pike’s route into acting was far from conventional. The daughter of two opera singers, she spent much of her childhood travelling around Europe with her parents and originally studied the cello before discovering that she preferred “pretending to be someone else”. While studying English Literature at Oxford, she applied to several drama schools and was rejected by all of them. Instead, she joined the National Youth Theatre, where her performance as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet earned her an agent. She graduated from Oxford with a 2:1 and, almost immediately afterwards, landed her first film role as Miranda Frost in Die Another Day at just 23.

Despite making her film debut as a Bond girl, Pike deliberately returned to theatre rather than immediately chasing Hollywood. She later revealed that she had never actually grown up watching Bond films because movies and television played little part in her childhood. Her career eventually took a dramatic turn with Gone Girl, for which she beat a huge list of actresses including Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron and Emily Blunt. David Fincher also put her through rigorous boxing training for the role of Amy Dunne. The performance earned Pike her first Oscar nomination and transformed the perception of her from former Bond girl into one of Hollywood’s most versatile leading actresses.
