President Donald Trump has made personal insults a defining feature of his political communication, regularly targeting political opponents, journalists and public figures with mocking nicknames, attacks on their intelligence and criticism of their appearances. The pattern has continued during his second term. On October 29, 2026, Trump called a Reuters reporter “disgusting” and said he looked “like hell” after the journalist questioned him about canceled campaign rallies. His remarks have drawn criticism from press freedom advocates and political opponents, while supporters frequently characterize his unfiltered language as a rejection of traditional political conventions. The frequency of Trump’s insults has also increased. A May 2026 Washington Post analysis found that approximately 93% of his second-term speeches contained at least one vulgar term, compared with roughly 40% during the first 18 months of his first presidency. The analysis also found that vulgar or insulting social media posts had roughly tripled compared with a similar period during his first term. Presidential rhetoric has long included sharp criticism and political attacks, but Trump’s frequent use of personal ridicule has challenged established expectations for communication from the Oval Office. As the November 3 midterm elections approach, his remarks continue to fuel debate over political civility, presidential conduct and the relationship between elected officials and the news media.
