⛲🌸 Joaquín Rodrigo – Concierto de Aranjuez, II. Adagio Xabi Gabiola Leniz – flugelhorn soloist 🎺 Lekeitio Musika Banda – town band • Before it reached the flugelhorn, this Adagio was written for guitar and orchestra. To write the piece, Rodrigo, a trained pianist, studied in depth what the guitar could do. His contact with guitarist Regino Sainz de la Maza, to whom the piece is dedicated, began over dinner in San Sebastián. It was Sainz de la Maza who premiered it in Barcelona, in 1940. The composer himself described the concerto as an evocation of the gardens of Aranjuez, with the scent of magnolias and the murmur of fountains. Today Concierto de Aranjuez is cited as the Spanish work that earns the most in royalties, ahead of Macarena and Aserejé. • Listen again and notice the start: for an instant the soloist lowers the flugelhorn from his lips and returns to playing right away, while the conductor raises his arm beside him. After that, in none of the frames checked through the end does the flugelhorn appear lowered again. The volume rises and falls without the line ever breaking, and from the middle of the video onward the lowest point comes near the end, with the soloist still playing. • Xabi Gabiola Leniz is from Lekeitio and plays here with his hometown's own band, in front of a gilded altarpiece and white flowers. Lekeitio Musika Banda, with more than fifty musicians, is the city's oldest cultural group: it was born as La Independiente and stood idle during the Spanish Civil War. Gabiola now teaches at the Musikaia school and at the J. C. Arriaga Conservatory, in Bilbao.
