Toto famously hates to get wet. We thought he might grow out of it — but as he gets older, he only seems to get more set in his ways. Most afternoons, he manages to dodge the mud bath entirely. You can see his tactics on fine display here: When the others go to wallow, Toto suddenly acts like he has very important business to attend to with his favourite Keeper, Sammy (who has been with him since he was a baby!). Toto is a sensitive young bull who thrives with extra cosseting, so we happily play along with the ruse. After she’s done wallowing, nanny Kindani comes over and covers him with a trunkful of mud — a bit of a lost cause, but better than nothing! — If you missed it, our latest Ithumba Keepers’ Diaries detail a very funny account featuring Toto, water, frogmarching, and chameleon feet. You have to read it to believe it! Active foster parents will have access by logging in: https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/keepers-diaries/september-2026/ithumba-unit — Toto is a very special little elephant. Rescued as a days-old orphan, he was actually delivered into our care by ex-orphans. Now four years old, he is gradually working his way back to the wild from our Ithumba Reintegration Unit. What a year. What a LIFE. 🎈 Probably the biggest year of mine so far. Pregnancy. Becoming a mom to Zy. Signing a commercial lease. Building our very own All Day Fit. 🥲 I didn’t know I wanted kids. I definitely didn’t know I wanted a commercial lease lol. But what I did know was that I wanted to live a big, full life. And HOLY SHIT, are we ever. Birthdays are funny. Some years they’re happy, some years they’re heavy. Sometimes they’re both. This year, I’m feeling a whole lot of gratitude. For the people I’ve met. The risks I’ve taken. Everything I’ve been able to experience. The things I’ve built. The love I’ve experienced. The people I get to share it with 🫶🏻) All the versions of myself I’ve become along the way. And maybe most of all, for the things I never saw coming. Because as much as I’ve always believed in building a life I love, some of the most beautiful parts of it are things I never could have planned. I’m grateful for the privilege of growing older. For another year of this big, beautiful life. 🌎 For the little girl in the last photo, and all the versions of me in between. I’m proud of us. AND EXCITEDDDD because we’re just opening up MANY doors. There’s lots of great things to come this year mama💗
I think my argument was pretty logical 🤣
