Your body tries to “eat” tattoo ink because it sees the ink as a foreign substance. When the ink is injected into the dermis (the deeper layer of skin), your immune system sends special cells called macrophages whose job is to find and remove anything that doesn’t belong. These cells try to break down and carry away the ink particles, but the particles are too large to fully remove, so the cells end up holding onto them in the skin. That trapped pigment is what makes the tattoo stay visible.
