A massive alleged cat-stealing operation in Vietnam has been broken up after police accused a group of men of taking thousands of pets from residential neighborhoods and funneling them into the country’s cat meat trade.

Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City arrested 12 men accused of stealing and tr*fficking nearly 2,700 cats.

Police said the suspects admitted “to stealing and tr*fficking approximately 2,700 cats of various types.” Investigators say the men allegedly worked in small teams, traveling through neighborhoods by motorbike between roughly 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. Each group was believed to have taken between four and 10 cats a night.

Police reportedly uncovered the network in July, when officers seized 50 live cats along with 55 traps, two measuring scales and two fur removal machines.

Criminal proceedings officially began Sunday. Eating dog and cat meat remains legal in Vietnam, although sellers are required to provide documentation showing where the animals originated.

Stolen cats can reportedly be sold to restaurants for at least 70,000 dong, or about $2.70, per kilogram.

The latest arrests follow another major crackdown earlier this year. In June, authorities rescued more than 400 cats from an alleged meat tr*fficking operation, with at least 40 later reunited with their owners.

“It was quite an overwhelming sight to see so many cats seized from just a single transport in Vietnam’s illicit cat meat trade,” Humane World for Animals Viet Nam director Phuong Tham said.

“The sad truth about this trade is that thousands of cats every month are being stolen, tr*fficked and sl*ughtered for meat across the country, and the fate of most is to end up at a sl*ughterhouse or restaurant to be k*lled and eaten.”
