Now on view at the IFPDA Print Fair in New York!

A sketch for Frank Romero’s very first mural in the early 1970s, this study marks the beginning of the East L.A. mural movement. A point of discussion among the group of friends that would later become Los Four (Romero, Carlos Almaraz, Gilbert Magu” Lujan, and later Beto de la Rocha) was how best to appeal to and communicate with young people at that time. What they agreed upon was the power of graffiti and spray paint, a media with which they would experiment both individually and collectively. For the final mural with which this study relates Romero rolled on a ground layer of acrylic paint, adding on top of it spray painted nostalgic characters related to the L.A. Harbor and adjoining L.A. River.
