Some birthday wishes today, to a good friend of The Hard Compound and terrific all-rounder Alex Caffi.
From Rovato, Italy, Alex saw success in karting before moving to Formula Fiat Abarth for 1982 & 1983, taking 2nd overall in the latter.
1984 brought Italian F3 with Euroteam, taking 2nd overall before a switch to Coloni in 1985 saw him take 2nd before while 3rd place was achieved with Osella in 1986.
It was with Osella that Caffi made his F1 debut at Monza that year, completing the race 6 laps down.
A full season followed in 1987 but mechanical issues meant 13 retirements, 2 DNQs and a 12th place at Imola was all he had to show for his efforts.
1988 & 1989 were spent with the quicker, better funded Scuderia Italia Dallara team, where his F1 points arrived with 4th in Monaco (behind only Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost & Stefano Modena), adding 6th in Canada & being taken out of 5th while lapping team mate Andrea de Cesaris in Phoenix.
Another 5th in Monaco came with Footwork in 1990 before a disastrous 1991 was epitomised by a spectacular accident in Monaco that split his car in half.
The early part of 1992 was spent with the Andrea Moda team - Caffi left after expressing displeasure, rightly, at how the team was run.
After F1 Alex raced in Spanish & Italian Touring Cars, IMSA, global GT Racing, ALMS, the 2011 IRC Rally Monte-Carlo, GP Masters and the FIA WEC including 3 runnings of the 24 Heures du Mans with Porsche, Courage & Spyker.
He currently owns Alex Caffi Motorsports competing in the NASCAR Euro Series, with Jacques Villeneuve recently taking a victory for the team at Vallelunga.
A great all rounder and hugely likeable chap.
Buon Compleanno, Alex 🇮🇹
