Six awful facts about sardine fishing 🐟💔
Sardines are being fished to collapse, destroying ocean food chains:
1. Billions are killed annually for pet food and fishmeal – Most sardines never reach human plates. They’re ground up to feed farmed fish, cats, dogs, and livestock
2. They’re caught in massive purse seine nets – Entire schools are encircled and trapped in nets up to half a mile long. Millions of fish are hauled up in single catches
3. They suffocate slowly in ship holds – Sardines are dumped into holds where they’re crushed and suffocate under the weight of other fish, dying slowly over 10-15 minutes
4. Populations have collapsed by 90%+ in key regions – California sardine populations crashed so severely that fishing was banned in 2015, yet they still haven’t recovered
5. Their disappearance starves ocean predators – Dolphins, seals, pelicans, sea lions, and larger fish depend on sardines for survival. When sardines collapse, entire ecosystems fail
6. Overfishing prevents natural recovery – Sardines populations fluctuate naturally with ocean conditions, but constant fishing pressure during low periods prevents any bounce back
Sardines are critical to ocean health. Fishing them to extinction destroys marine life from the bottom up.
Save and share to protect ocean ecosystems.
