BTS REEL: A Day of Love, Legacy, and the Spirit of the Headband.
Yesterday, the Rainier Beach Community Center wasn’t just a gym—it was the heart of a movement. Community members gathered for the “Thank You for the Love” Basketball Empowerment Camp to honor a man who gave his soul to this city: the legendary Donald “Slick” Watts.
The energy was electric as Seattle City Council President Joy Hollingsworth (@joyhollings) officially proclaimed March 21st as Donald “Slick” Watts Day. Reading the proclamation to his son, Donald Watts Jr., she reminded us all that Slick’s impact went far beyond being the first player in NBA history to lead the league in assists and steals in a single season. He was a mentor, a physical education teacher for over 40 years, and a beacon of hope for generations of Seattle youth.
This day was made possible by the powerful collaboration between Fathers and Sons Together (FAST) (@fathersandsonstogether) and the Watts Foundation (@thewattsfoundation). Seeing community members, young and old, alongside legends like Shawn Kemp, embodied the very essence of community. The work FAST is doing to bridge gaps and create a “Beautiful Safe Place” in the Rainier Valley is a direct extension of the love Slick poured into us for over five decades.
As Donald Watts Jr. (@donaldwatts24) shared, this is about more than basketball—it’s about the healing power of showing up for one another. Slick always said, “It’s all about the love,” and yesterday, Seattle loved him back.
