New York City is moving toward ending its horse-drawn carriage industry after more than 150 years.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin have reached an agreement to phase out the industry by June 2028, with a City Council vote scheduled for October 22.

The proposed legislation would also provide career support for carriage drivers and require horses to be sold humanely as the industry winds down.

The agreement marks a major step toward ending one of New York City's longest-running tourist traditions, although the ban still requires legislative approval.

Today is International Day for Failure. A day for everyone who tried, stumbled, lost, and still hasn't given up. Not every story ends with success, not every dream comes true on time, and not every effort gets the recognition it deserves. But failure doesn't make your journey meaningless. Sometimes, simply having the courage to try is an achievement in itself.

First cozy Sunday well spent! Just went for walks and stayed at home. Very relaxing! Wish you a happy new week! 🍁

In Iran, something as simple as taking a ballet class can put your life at risk. After the 1979 Iranian Revolution, ballet was banned and the Iranian National Ballet Company was dissolved.

Known as the “Persian Swan,” Tara Ghassemieh became the first Iranian-American principal dancer at Golden State Ballet. Through Dancers of Iran, an organization connecting dancers inside and outside the country, she has secretly taught ballet to students inside Iran using virtual classes and underground networks, reaching young people who put their safety on the line simply to dance.

For women and girls in Iran, the restrictions on dance are part of a much larger fight for freedom. Women face strict dress codes, discrimination in education and employment, and restrictions on their ability to travel and make decisions about their own lives. In 2022, following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in morality police custody, the Woman, Life, Freedom movement sparked nationwide protests. Iranian authorities responded with a violent crackdown that left hundreds dead and thousands arrested.

Ghassemieh has used her art to bring attention to their fight. She created The White Feather, a ballet telling the story of Iran’s disbanded National Ballet Company, and has used her platform to amplify the voices of Iranian women. In an interview with DanceOn, Ghassemieh opened up about supporting the movement and the risks that have come with speaking out. Her Instagram account was recently hacked and held for ransom, and she believes her advocacy made her a target. For Ghassemieh and her students, dance is a form of self-expression, freedom, joy and resistance.
