Being smart is one thing. Knowing when you’re wrong is something else entirely 🧠 That second skill is called metacognition, the habit of thinking about your own thinking. It shows up when you catch yourself rushing to a conclusion, realize you only half understand something or notice a strategy isn’t working and change course. It’s often called the highest form of intelligence because it makes everything else you know more useful. Spotting your blind spots, questioning your assumptions and understanding how you learn best can matter more than how much information you’ve memorized. Research on learning supports it, too. Students who plan ahead, check their progress and reflect on what worked tend to outperform those who simply study longer. It’s also a skill you can build. Try asking yourself “What am I missing?” or “How sure am I, really?” a little more often.
