Here she is! The Madwoman’s Library’s June book: “Breasts and Eggs” by Mieko Kawakami.

I know what you’re thinking about the title. And yes, this is a story explicitly about what it is to be awoman. However, it is not meant to alienate the men folk, it is meant to open you up.

We have spent this year moving through people who couldn’t see their own enclosures, and then people who could see them and called them home anyway, and then Han Kang showed us the street on fire. We are outside now. This is the outside book. Natsuko is a writer, single and asexual, approaching forty, who wants a child. And contemporary Japan, along with its medical and economic infrastructure, has a lot to say about whether that is permitted.

To the men in the group: I have been thinking about how to say this. The books that have changed me as a reader are almost always the ones that required me to live inside a consciousness unlike my own. This is one of those. Also, if you loved Remains of the Day earlier this year, Natsuko is doing what Stevens could never do. She can see the system.
