EAR TENSION
Jaw pain often travels through the temporomandibular joint and out toward the ear.
Biomechanics: The temporomandibular joint shares innervation with structures around the external auditory meatus. When the lateral pterygoid and masseter remain in sustained contraction, pain radiates along those shared pathways. Clients describe earache that mimics an infection, yet the source is muscular tension in the joint. The temporalis and sternocleidomastoid then tighten to guard the jaw, creating a chain of referred discomfort. Treating the ear or the neck misses the actual driver unless the mandibular mechanics are addressed first.
Recommendation: Assess mandibular glide and bite position before treating the ear or neck directly. Restoring joint motion removes the neural cross-talk that keeps pain signals firing around the ear. #temporomandibular #jaw #pterygoid #masseter #temporalis #manualtherapy #biomechanics #clinicalmassage #wildharmony #TMJ
