When in Rome or Crete, perhaps Spain even, on beaches, in forests or even in hedgerows near your home, leave it better than when you found it. So my global clean up is well and truly up and running. Yesterday myself, Belle and a superstar 12 year old called Iyan cleaned the beach. This kid! Just wow. He turned up alone after 3 others failed to show, he was literally waiting by the drive as I arrived home. He was briefed in Tagalog and he went at it with utter enthusiasm. He even carried a bag off the beach and I tell you it was heavy! He then wanted to do more, so he filled three bags alone. I have never been more proud of a stranger before. He said he wanted to work hard to help his parents. 😢. This kid has nothing. No PlayStation, bike or even decent trainers. But when he got his wages his eyes lit up! As he left we let him choose some clothes from Charlie’s sports kits, he was so grateful. Grandma gave him a huge bag of freshly picked mangoes to share with his family. I will also leave a fund here so he can continue each week when I return home. He did not just clean a beach, this gave him a sense of agency, pride and a tangible reward for his hard work. The clothes, the mangoes and that regular little wage. That is life changing, sustainable impact. We are giving him a stepping stone, not just a handout. He is coming back tomorrow to earn some more. Until you come here, you do not realise how lucky we truly are. I am hoping Iyan will enjoy having a little job with a regular wage and maybe it develops a work ethic to see him through into adulthood, not only a clean beach but a little kid who has now got a purpose. So remember wherever you go this summer. Take a bag and clean up. X
