The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has moved to recover KSh 623.39 million in alleged outstanding tax arrears from former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko through First Community Bank. In a notice dated October 12, 2026, KRA appointed the bank as its agent, directing it to remit any funds held on Sonko’s behalf, or any money owed to him, towards settling the claimed tax liability.

The amount comprises KSh 308.92 million in principal tax, KSh 15.76 million in penalties and KSh 298.72 million in interest, relating to the period between January 2015 and December 2019. KRA invoked Section 42 of the Tax Procedures Act, 2015, which allows it to appoint third parties to help recover unpaid taxes. The authority warned that the bank could become personally liable for the specified amount if it fails to comply with the notice without reasonable cause.
