People hear “$10,000 production day” and think the dentist takes home $10,000.

Here’s the reality.

$2,500 to $3,000 goes to your team before anyone picks up a handpiece.
$500 to $800 in supplies.
Up to $1,000 in lab fees. $300 to $500 in equipment costs. Another $500 to $1,000 in rent, insurance, software, and everything else it takes to keep the doors open.

What’s left? About $3,500 on a good day.
Running a dental practice is a business.
And business has a cost.

Did you think dentists kept more or less than this?

I went to a dentist a year ago for an exam, and they told me I had six cavities. I really didn't believe him, but I had him do the work anyway. 6 months later, I went back for a cleaning. After the hygienist was done, the dentist met with me for an exam. He then proceeded to tell me that I had six more cavities. I basically told him he was full of shit and there is no way I would have six more cavities in 6 months, especially because I take very good care of my teeth. I went to a different dentist for an evaluation, and he told me that I only had maybe one. And that one was really small and didn't necessarily need a filling. He explained to me that a lot of dentists will pull this shit on patients just to get you to pay, because they have a lot of expenses that they have to recoup. Dental school being one of them...

Hygiene production should be covering hygiene salary, supplies and helping pay for other non production staff.
