Lindsay Lohan originally wanted to play the role of Regina George because she was tired of being the nice girl on screen. However, the director felt she was a better fit for Cady and cast Rachel McAdams as the leader of the group instead. Rachel actually wore a wig throughout the entire movie because her natural hair could not be styled into the specific look needed for the character.

The cast spent a lot of time bonding at a local mall before filming started to make their friendships look natural. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey wrote several of the funniest lines based on their real experiences in high school. During the famous talent show scene, the actors had to practice the choreography for weeks to make sure their performance looked both coordinated and accidentally awkward.
