I wish I could say I’m surprised that we’re marketing this stuff to children. Candy-coated chicken. Soda in smoothies. Cereal dressed up as a Halloween character. But this is Big Food’s playbook: make the product colorful, turn it into entertainment, and give children a reason to ask for it. These companies understand the power of familiarity, excitement, and belonging. They spend enormous resources making their products part of our celebrations, our childhood memories, and our everyday routines. You can still enjoy Halloween and have a few treats you love. Keep your meals centered on real food, skip the candy-coated dinner, and try simple treats like dark chocolate with nuts or apple slices with almond butter. There’s plenty of room for celebration without turning the entire month into a sugar festival.
