How are you supposed to pick just 20 photos? 😩 These are good ones, though. 🩷

Two days before Josie died I had a dream that I was walking on a path with her in the woods. Suddenly, she took off and climbed a big birch tree up to my eye level. “Wait, don’t go too far up, I’ll lose you!” She climbed again, determined and eyes set on something up higher. I screamed, “NOO, Josie, no, come back please!” I knew she was too far out of reach and that she was gone. I cried so hard in my dream that I woke up. It was an awful dream, but I woke up and she was beside me. I cried a bit as I told her about the dream, and scratched her ears and told her not to go climbing any birch trees because I loved her too much to lose her.

We went on with our day, and another day. Then, time stopped. My heart shattered and I screamed and cried because I really had lost her for good. I was not expecting that day to be our last one together. I would have done it so much differently ❤️🩹The days leading up were no different than any other day, other than my bad dream. We had lots of cuddles and scritches, napped, and did all the things we’ve been doing together for fifteen years.

Seth and I brought her home on the way home from our honeymoon, so she was with us since the beginning. She was our baby. She moved with us across the country (twice), had many road trips in the car, lived in 7 houses, endured 2 dogs, caught mice, and absolutely loved going outside to roll on a concrete patio.

You can’t dig up your patio to bury your loved one, but you can lay them to rest in a sunny spot in your yard. So we did that. Seth picked a spot under our willow tree and we laid her there. I imagined she would like it there so she could swat at the branches as they blow past her like the shoe laces we used to dangle in front of her to play. We planted flowers there this year, so it’s pretty there, just like her.

Grieving for a pet you shared a bond with is a long, hard process, but talking about her and sharing her memory helps a lot. I’ll never ever forget her or give over the place she holds in my heart.
